Pandemic work insights we can bring back to the office

Worldwide, many companies found working remotely proved so successful that they are likely to continue remote work or hybrid models after lockdown. Our journey to adapt to remote work without compromising employee experience while using new technologies has certainly changed the way we work. What are some of the lessons that we are likely to take with us post-pandemic?

In a blog from 2020, Deloitte looked at possibilities for what businesses can assimilate from the work models during the pandemic. Here are a few important points:

  • Working together digitally required a different approach in many ways to how we worked together in the office. One of the most significant issues was giving our workers a sense of connection and purpose. Going forward, organisations must continue to empower employees to find a connection, making links to how their contributions are making an impact on the organisation but also more generally to society as a whole.

  • As the pandemic intensified, many businesses saw the importance of addressing the deeper issue of psychological well-being. As we return to work, we need to keep focusing on having a healthy psyche by creating a platform where we can talk about issues related to wellness. We also need to redesign work, keeping psychological well-being front of mind in the way we design and deliver work and put a focus on outputs instead of activities.

  • The pandemic fast-tracked the adoption of technology as employers and workers adapted to remote working. We used technology in new ways to suit the demands of a world where we had to protect ourselves from Covid-19, including telemedicine, manufacturing health products, education, and grocery delivery. Moving forward, businesses should embrace the potential of technology to streamline costs and enable new ways of working.

  • One of the lessons from the pandemic was that organisations and employees need to have a degree of agility to deal with unexpected events that can come up. During times of crisis, resilience and adaptability were beneficial attributes for workers who had to change the way they worked and possibly even their role in the company. As we return to our offices, employers should continue to encourage workers to develop new skills.
